  • In the multifragmentary tuft fractures, the K-wire fixation has been removed.
  • In the simple shaft fracture, cannulated screw fixation has replaced K-wire fixation.
  • Tension band fixation for dorsal avulsion fractures has been removed.
  • K-wire fixation of palmar avulsion fractures has been removed

Pages on the following topics have been added:

  • Patient assessment
  • Complications and technical failures
  • Patient positioning

Two approach videos have been added:

  • Dorsal Approach to Distal Interphalangeal (DIP) Joint of the Finger
  • Finger, Distal Interphalangeal Joint (DIP), Palmar Approach

Table of contents

The distal phalangeal material of the hand, second edition, includes a detailed description of the following injury types and their management.

Dislocation of the DIP joint:

  • Nonoperative treatment (splint)
  • Joint transfixation with K-wire

Dorsal avulsion injuries of the proximal end segment (mallet finger):

  • Nonoperative treatment (splint)
  • Joint transfixation with K-wire
  • Extensor block pinning or K-wire fixation (with joint transfixation)
  • Screw fixation

Palmar avulsion injuries of the proximal end segment:

  • Nonoperative treatment (splint)
  • Suture fixation
  • Screw fixation

Simple fractures of the diaphysis and distal end segment:

  • Nonoperative treatment (splint)
  • Cannulated screw fixation

Multifragmentary fractures of the diaphysis and distal end segment:

  • Nonoperative treatment (splint)

Additional material

The following additional material is available for this module:

  • Dorsal approach to the DIP joint
  • Palmar approach to the DIP joint
  • Supine patient position
  • Assessment of distal phalangeal injuries of the hand
  • Complications and technical failures in distal phalangeal injury management
  • References on management of distal phalangeal injuries
