Timing of treatment

Vascular compromise is the only absolute indication for emergency surgery.

The management of open fractures can be delayed overnight, provided antibiotics are administered and there is no associated vascular injury.

The availability of surgical resources influences the timing of the treatment.

Temporary immobilization on fixed or balanced traction is useful for pain management if surgery is delayed.
