Decision making and timing of treatment

1. Decision making

Make the correct diagnosis based on:

  • Patient assessment
  • Analysis of radiology
  • Evaluation of fracture stability

This information is required to determine the optimal treatment.

2. Timing of treatment

Prompt surgical treatment is indicated in the following cases:

  • Neurovascular injury
  • Open fractures
  • Severe displacement with soft-tissue compromise

The exact timing of surgery will depend on local protocol, but surgical management as soon as safe anesthesia is possible is recommended.

In other cases, if pain management and immobilization are adequate, an elective procedure is appropriate.
